    Art as a starting point: Tulip Mania

    In the Dutch Golden Age, the prices of the newly introduced tulip bulbs reached extreme heights. In January 1637, tulip bulbs were sold for more than ten times the annual salary of a skilled craftsman, and were worth about the same as an Amsterdam canal house. There was also speculation in options on tulips, which were still in the ground at that time. The tulip mania is seen by economists as the first extensively described bubble (wave of speculation) in world history. The term tulip mania is often used as a metaphor for a large economic bubble.
